![]() ![]() Well, originally collections of art and artifacts were collected by the wealthy. Just think about what is hanging on your walls in your living room or the certain books you have displayed out on your shelves, so that when people look at them, they think you are really smart. The really amazing stuff we collect, we try to display or place in a "special" room. People from the Paleolithic times to modern times have this tendency to collect stuff, especially stuff we think is awesome. The collection (art or objects) has always been a part of the history of museums from the beginning. From then on, the word has been used to describe collections and to denote a building which housed a collection with public access. The word museum really came into history in the 15th century BC in Europe to describe the collection of Lorenzo de' Medici (really wealthy, powerful guy, who also was a great patron of the arts) in Florence. The word museum has classical origins! The Greek word form of it ( Mouseion) meant "set of Muses", where the Latin word derivation form ( museum) meant places of philosophical discussion. Museums have an interesting history, starting from their name.
